I believe that creativity is central to human nature, and this drives me to be an expansive and multidisciplinary artist. My work ranges from place based meditations on art processes that spark joy to large scale works that invite audiences to participate through wonder and surprise. I use fiber, printmaking, and time-based arts to generate new ideas and connections.
The core of my practice is connecting with people by creating opportunities for participation. Art is an opportunity for learning and sharing, so I consider my profession as an educator to be deeply entwined with my practice as an artist.
Our understanding of the world around us is interdependent and interwoven: the world, including art and education is shaped by the people and systems which work together to weave it. A knitted wool cloth is different from a silk woven and a crocheted cotton.
People come to understand the world in divergent ways. Some people loop, others run straight along, still others get tied in knots.
My role as an artist and educator is to perceive and attempt to understand these ways of moving and building connections between people and the work that I create so that what people perceive will help them weave their own cloth and add to the tapestry of knowledge. Seeing the ways that people process and participate in my work, so too I am inspired and learn from the interconnected fabric of our world.
